The 1900 census in the Digital Archive

The 1900 census

A royal decree of 8. August 1900 stated that there should be taken census on the night of Monday 3. December 1900. Everyone in Norway should be registered where they stayed at the time of the census.

On the top of this page you find a search engine for the entire 1900 census. You start searching on one variable, and narrow the search down by searching on other variables. The help page is very useful for the global search.

If you know which municipality you want to search, you select the appropriate county from the list to the left.

December 2000 the 1900 census material in the Digital Archives was extended. In addition to updating the information, the lists from the extra households and ships' lists were added. The houeshold lists were included in the muncipalities to which they belonged, while the ships' lists are kept in one seperate database. It can be reached by selecting "All the country" from the "Fylke"-list to the left.

An agreement has been reached with the Norwegian Historical Data Centre on exchanging census material. Their material is now accessible in our pages, the same way as our material is accessible through their pages.
